Interpretation of Peak Flow Meter: Clinical Guidelines for Correlating Patient Breath Scores to Personal Baselines
Quick Answer
Peak flow meters in clinical use measure the fastest speed of air a patient can blow out. Doctors compare this value to a personal baseline that is set when the patient is stable. A score below 80 percent of that baseline often means the patient needs a treatment change. Silver Automation Instruments does not sell medical peak flow meters. We supply industrial flow meters for liquid and gas processes.
What a Peak Flow Meter Does in a Clinic
Peak flow meters are simple handheld devices. They read peak expiratory flow in liters per minute. A healthy adult male may record 500 to 700 L/min. A child with asthma may record 200 to 400 L/min. The meter has a sliding marker. The patient blows once. The marker stops at the peak value.
This reading matters because asthma control changes from morning to night. Many doctors ask patients to log morning and evening values. Over two weeks these numbers form a pattern. That pattern becomes the personal baseline.
How a Personal Baseline Is Set
A doctor asks the patient to use the peak flow meter twice a day for two weeks. The patient records the best result from each test. The highest value during a stable period is the personal baseline. This is not a textbook number. It is a number specific to that patient.
For example a 45 year old female patient with moderate asthma may have a personal baseline of 420 L/min. Her best value may be 430 L/min on a good day. The baseline is then set at 420 L/min. Clinical guidelines often use this baseline to build three zones.
Clinical Guidelines for Interpreting Scores
Most clinical teams use a traffic light system. The green zone is 80 to 100 percent of personal baseline. The yellow zone is 50 to 80 percent of baseline. The red zone is below 50 percent. Here is how that works in practice.
If the baseline is 420 L/min and the morning reading is 390 L/min, that is 93 percent. The patient stays in the green zone. No change is needed. If the reading drops to 300 L/min, that is 71 percent. The patient is in the yellow zone. The doctor may ask for a temporary increase in inhaler use. If the reading falls to 190 L/min, that is 45 percent. The patient enters the red zone. This means the patient should seek urgent medical help.
These numbers are not universal. Personal baselines change with age, lung function, and treatment. A reading of 300 L/min may be normal for one patient and low for another. That is why clinical guidelines repeat one message. Compare the day to the personal baseline, not to a general chart.
Industrial Flow Metering Is Different
Silver Automation Instruments works with industrial flow meters. Our customers measure cooling water, diesel, natural gas, chemicals, and steam. Medical peak flow meters are not part of our product line. But the same principle of a repeatable baseline applies to process flow.
Engineers set a normal flow range for a pump or a compressor. Then they watch for deviation. A drop below 80 percent of the normal flow may mean a clogged filter. A spike above 110 percent may mean a leak downstream. In the field we have seen this m

Industrial Flow Meter Selection for Engineers
For liquid flow we often recommend electromagnetic flow meters from DN15 to DN300. They work on conductive fluids with at least 5 µS/cm. They output 4-20 mA HART. Accuracy is often 0.5 percent of reading. For gas flow we suggest thermal mass flow meters. They measure kg/h directly. They work well for compressed air and natural gas lines.
Coriolis mass flow meters handle density and mass flow in one device. We supply Coriolis meters for chemical dosing, palm oil, and fuel oil. A typical unit might measure 0 to 5000 kg/h with 0.1 percent accuracy. For custody transfer of diesel or crude oil we also provide oval gear flow meters. These are positive displacement meters. They handle high viscosity fluids with ease.
Because we work with customers in Vietnam, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, and Nigeria, we keep common process conditions ready. Send us your pressure in bar, temperature in °C, pipe size in DN, and flow range. Our engineers will reply with a model and price.
Customer Examples
Last year a paint manufacturer in Vietnam asked for a flow meter for solvent. The pipe size was DN25. Flow range was 0 to 800 kg/h. We supplied a Coriolis meter with 316L stainless steel wetted parts. The unit has been running for 14 months without drift.
A desalination plant in Saudi Arabia needed seawater flow measurement. The pipe was DN400. The conductivity was around 55 mS/cm. We supplied an electromagnetic flow meter with PTFE liner and titanium electrodes. The output went to a PLC via 4-20 mA HART.
These examples show industrial baselines. A plant engineer sets the normal operating window. The meter reports deviations. The same logic applies to a patient peak flow diary but with different sensors and process conditions.
FAQ
Q1. Is a medical peak flow meter the same as an industrial peak flow meter?
No. A medical peak flow meter measures exhaled air speed in L/min. An industrial flow meter measures mass or volume flow of process fluids. Silver Automation Instruments supplies industrial devices only.
Q2. Can I use an industrial flow meter to measure breath?
No. Industrial flow meters are not designed for human breath. They have fittings, pressure ratings, and wetted materials that are not safe for medical use.
Q3. What parameters do you need for a quote?
Send us your fluid name, pressure in bar, temperature in °C, pipe size in DN, and flow range. We will recommend a model and offer a price.
Q4. Do you supply flow meters for hazardous areas?
Yes. We supply devices with ATEX Zone 1 and Zone 2 certifications. We also have explosion proof enclosures for gas and dust environments.
Q5. Which flow meter is best for desalination plant seawater?
An electromagnetic flow meter is common. It handles high conductivity seawater well. We recommend a PTFE liner and titanium electrodes for long service life.
