EK Loop Connect Flow Meter Integration: PC Water Cooling Software Setup

Quick Answer: You can integrate a flow meter with EK Loop Connect when the meter has a pulse or frequency output. Set the pulse per liter value in the software and verify with a known flow. A 3-wire pulse flow meter with 5 V or 12 V power works for most PC water cooling loops.

What You Need Before the Setup

EK Loop Connect reads flow data from a compatible flow meter through a motherboard header or a dedicated controller. The software expects a pulse signal. Check the meter cable before you start. Three wires are common. One wire is power. One wire is ground. One wire is pulse output.

Most PC water cooling flow meters send about 100 to 600 pulses per minute at 1.0 L/min. The exact number depends on the rotor design. Write down this value. You will enter it later in EK Loop Connect.

Use a meter with a clean square wave output. Do not connect a 4-20 mA industrial flow meter directly to a PC fan header. It will not read correctly. The signal type is different. You need a converter or a pulse output module.

Wiring the Flow Meter to the Loop Connect System

Power off the PC before wiring. Find a free flow meter header or a spare fan header on the motherboard. Connect the pulse wire to the sense pin. Connect the ground wire to ground. Connect the power wire to 5 V or 12 V as required by the meter.

In practice, many users skip the tach wire. Do not skip it. The tach line is often the same as the pulse output line on these small meters. Read the meter label. Some meters need a pull-up resistor between the signal line and 5 V. If the reading is zero, add a 10 kΩ resistor.

We have seen this on customer sites many times. The flow meter spins, but the software shows no signal. The missing pull-up resistor is the usual cause.

Software Setup in EK Loop Connect

Open EK Loop Connect and go to the dashboard. Add a new sensor. Choose flow meter as the sensor type. Enter the pulse per liter value from the meter data sheet. If the meter data sheet gives pulses per gallon, convert it. One US gallon is 3.785 L.

Set the sampling time from 2 to 5 seconds. Short sampling makes the reading jumpy. Long sampling hides real flow changes. A 3 second window works well for a 0.5 to 2.0 L/min cooling loop.

For industrial cooling loops, the setup is different. Silver Instruments supplies electromagnetic flow meters with pulse, 4-20 mA HART, and RS485 outputs. These meters fit DN15 to DN300 pipes and handle 0.1 to 15 m/s flow velocity. They work in HVAC, chemical reactor cooling, and food beverage lines.

Calibration and Verification

After you enter the pulse per liter value, run the pump at a fixed speed. Compare the software reading with a known volume. Use a graduated cylinder and a stopwatch if you want a quick check. Let the loop run for 60 seconds. Collect the return water. If the software shows 1.0 L/min and you collect 1.0 L in one minute, the calibration is close.

Most engineers skip this part. They trust the default number. The default number is rarely correct for every rotor. Temperature changes the fluid viscosity. For water from 20 to 40 °C, the change is small. For glycol blends above 30 percent, the pulse output can drift by 2 to 5 percent.

If you use a Silver Instruments oval gear flow meter, pulse output is stable because the meter measures volume directly. These meters handle 0.5 to 500 cP viscosity, which

covers most coolant mixtures. A paint manufacturer in Southeast Asia uses these meters for solvent and resin blending. The pulse totalizer output works with standard PLC and PC data loggers.

Common Faults and Fixes

No signal in the software. Check the pull-up resistor. Check the ground wire. A floating ground causes a flat line.

Reading is too high. The pulse per liter value is too low. Increase it by the same percentage as the error.

Reading is too low. The pulse per liter value is too high. Reduce it and test again.

Flow shows zero at low pump speed. The rotor is stuck or the meter needs a minimum flow. Some impeller meters need 0.5 L/min minimum to spin. Use an ultrasonic clamp-on flow meter for low-flow testing. Silver Instruments portable ultrasonic flow meters work from DN15 to DN600 and do not contact the fluid.

Industrial Flow Meter Options for Cooling Loops

PC water cooling uses small impeller or rotor meters. Industrial cooling systems need more reliable hardware. A thermal mass flow meter works well for glycol cooling loops. An electromagnetic flow meter works for water with conductivity above 5 µS/cm. A Coriolis mass flow meter measures mass flow in kg/h and does not care about viscosity or temperature swings.

Because these industrial meters output 4-20 mA, pulse, or HART, they connect to PLC, SCADA, or data loggers. Some customers integrate them with custom PC software using Modbus RTU. The Silver Instruments support team can help with register mapping for selected models.

Last year a customer in Vietnam asked us about a cooling loop flow meter with pulse output for a chemical reactor. The pipe size was DN25. The flow range was 1 to 10 L/min. We supplied an oval gear flow meter with PT100 temperature compensation. The pulse output gave a clean signal to the customer data logger.

Quick Answer Recap

EK Loop Connect integration works best with a pulse output flow meter. Wire the pulse line, ground, and power. Enter the correct pulse per liter value. Test the reading with a known volume before you trust the dashboard.

For industrial flow meters, send us your pressure (bar), temperature (°C), pipe size (DN), and flow range. We will recommend a meter with the right output for your software or PLC.

FAQ

1. Can EK Loop Connect read a 4-20 mA flow meter?

No. EK Loop Connect reads pulse or frequency signals. Use a pulse output meter or add a signal converter.

2. What pulse per liter value should I enter?

Use the value from the meter data sheet. If it is missing, test with a known volume and adjust the value until the software reading matches the collected volume.

3. Does Silver Instruments sell PC water cooling flow meters?

We focus on industrial flow meters. Some oval gear and ultrasonic meters work for low-flow cooling loops, but they are larger and cost more than PC impeller meters.

4. Why does my flow reading jump around?

Increase the sampling time in EK Loop Connect. Check for air bubbles in the loop. Bubbles cause unstable rotor movement.

5. Can I use a thermal mass flow meter for a PC loop?

Thermal mass flow meters are not a good fit for small PC loops. They are better for industrial gas or liquid mass flow measurement. Use a small pulse meter for PC cooling.
